Catch the Kiwi

Catch the Kiwi

One of the oldest tricks in the book, the three coconuts scam. This game is very versatile. You can use it as a quick game for fun, or you can use it to torture your students. It's really up to you. The best part is there's no setup!

On the screen, three coconut shells are lifted, revealing two kiwi fruits and a kiwi bird. Tell your students to keep an eye on the kiwi bird as you shuffle the coconuts. Have your students guess which coconut is hiding the kiwi bird. You can change the speed of the shuffling. Also, you can cheat, placing the kiwi bird under any/all of the coconuts. Very easy. Very fun. Potentially, emotionally damaging.

How to play

-- Launch the game and display it on your screen --
Hit the 4 key on your keyboard to lift the three coconuts on the screen. You will see a kiwi bird in between two kiwi fruits. Tell your students to keep an eye on the bird. Hit the 4 key on your keyboard again to lower the coconuts. Press the spacebar to begin shuffling the coconuts. After a couple of shuffles, press the spacebar to stop and ask your students if they know which coconut the kiwi bird is under.

By default, the shuffling speed is slow. That means the first round will be extremely easy. Let students call out the number of the coconut that they believe has the bird under it. Use the 1, 2, and 3 keys on your keyboard to lift the coconuts in those positions. Once you’ve revealed the correct answer, press the 4 key on your keyboard again to lower the three coconuts. Let your students know that you’re going to shuffle the coconuts again, but a little faster.

Use the + key on your keyboard to switch to fast mode. Press the spacebar to begin shuffling. After about 8 seconds, press the spacebar to stop shuffling. Again, ask your students if they know where the kiwi is. Lift the coconuts one by one to reveal the answer. Repeat a couple of more times.

Now, bring a student up front and explain that you’ll give them a prize if they can find the kiwi without any help. Begin shuffling and allow it to go extra long. Stop the shuffling and tell the student to first guess which coconut has the bird under it. Make sure they’re absolutely sure with their choice. Drag this part out for dramatics. Use the buttons in the control panel to force their answer to be the bird. For example, if they guess the middle coconut, pressing the up arrow key before the 2 key (which lifts the middle coconut), will change whatever is under that coconut to be the kiwi bird. Press 2 on your keyboard to lift that coconut to reveal the bird. Everyone will go crazy with such a “lucky guess”.
